REALLYMUSICRADIO presents
Fergus McCormick
Fergus McCormick just might fool you.
Not because he's trying to pull a fast one...far from it. On his latest album, Jumping the Gun, a winsome picture appears, of a life governed by the search for love, recounted with gentle irony and faith that it will all work out well in the end.
His music mirrors this message: Its rustic feel complements the yearning of his stories. With a distinctive singing voice--innocent though experienced, tickled with sly humor...he leads us from the title track, which opens the album with scenes from a relationship in its final moments, to "Is It Over?," which brings us closer to hope than resolution.
Along the way we meet the archetypes of his dreams: On "Girl in the Country Jeans" he imagines "riding over the plains" with his love, while on "My Heart, Hold on to Me" she's a host at a party he visits, haughty yet tantalizing: "She'd insult me at the door, my compliments ignore--but secretly she'd wonder if I'm free."
Or she's got "light blue eyes, Italian clothes, suntanned and warm inside" ("I Saw Her on Monday"). Or maybe she's a vision of white on a black leather sofa, who actually answers the phone when he calls ("The Queen of Star 69").
McCormick, obviously, is a romantic. He's tasted the bittersweet of going separate ways and maintained the sad optimism over what tomorrow may bring. And he's an artist, whose gift is to put these wisps into words and melodies that linger after the music has stopped.
